Assessments and Initial Appointments
To understand your child’s strengths, interests and areas needing support, the Speech Pathologist may need to complete an assessment with you and your child in your first appointment.
If your child has not seen a Speech Pathologist before or has not had a speech pathology assessment completed within the last 12 months, your initial appointment will be an assessment session.
An assessment session is generally between 60-90 minutes and may involve activities such as:
- Discussing your child’s development and medical history
- An observation of their speech, language, play and social skills
- Completing parent questionnaires
- Completing formal or informal assessments of speech, language, play and literacy skills.
Following the assessment session, the Speech Pathologist will prepare a detailed report outlining your child’s strengths and areas requiring further support.
A follow-up meeting with the Speech Pathologist will be scheduled to discuss the report, set goals for the child’s therapy and/or provide any take-home strategies if ongoing therapy is not required. All parents/carers of the child are encouraged to attend this meeting with the Speech Pathologist.
The fee for our assessment session is inclusive of:
- Initial assessment session (up to 90 mins)
- Preparation of the assessment report
- Follow-up meeting with the Speech Pathologist
Please contact us to discuss assessment fees.
If your child has undertaken an assessment within the last 12 months and you are able to provide a detailed report, your child may not require a new assessment before beginning services.
Instead, the Speech Pathologist will meet with you and your child for an initial 45 minute appointment to gather information about your child and their skills. Within this appointment, if the Speech Pathologist feels they need further information about your child’s skills that not available in the provided report, an assessment session may be required.
A follow-up meeting with the Speech Pathologist will be scheduled to set goals for the child’s therapy before commencing ongoing sessions.
Please note, if the report is not provided at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment, is not a comprehensive assessment report or the assessment was conducted greater than 12 months ago, your child will require a new assessment.
Please contact us to discuss fees.
